November Book Recommendation

It’s November, and Christmas is approaching quickly (the Santa Claus parade will be making its way through Kitchener Waterloo this weekend).  But this also means, “Winter is coming!”

When the weather turns cold, it’s a great time to pick up a new book, this month I’m recommending one of the most paradoxical titles in the history of Christian publishing:  Charle’s Foster’s classic, Celebration of Discipline.

Celebration of Discipline

This is not a book on how to punish your kids.  It is a book on developing spiritual practices that foster a rich relationship with God.

In all likelihood, this will cover some familiar ground, but Foster will also lead you to undiscovered country.  He’s clearly well versed in the history of these spiritual practices and he’s able to bring together profound theological ideas with practical guidance.

Here’s an outline of his table  of contents:

Inward Disciplines

  • Mediation
  • Prayer
  • Fasting
  • Study

Outward Disciplines

  • Simplicity
  • Solitude
  • Submission
  • Service

Corporate Disciplines

  • Confession
  • Worship
  • Guidance
  • Celebration

Without exaggerating, this has been one of the most enriching books I’ve read over the past few years. If you can get past the title, it’ll be well worth your time.

Richard Foster is a great writer and we have a copy of this book at our place if anyone wants to borrow it!
